GREAT BRITAIN

Captain Shiphay in Sweden

This film was produced so that pupils could share our learning following our visit to Sweden.  It features our school mascot, Captain Shiphay on his visit to Goteborg.  He has accompanied us on each visit and has made a friend in each country.

TRAVELOGUES

The final outcome for our Comenius project has been our travelogues.  Each travelogues shows two types of journey: the children's learning journey within the theme of "our local area" and a learning journey for the reader through that environment.

Each team has taken a different focus with the youngest children focusing on rivers, our Middle School children focusing on our coast and our oldest children learning about Dartmoor.

Each partner country has a published version of these travelogues but here are some examples of the pages for you to enjoy here on our website.

A TERM IN THE LIFE OF COMENIUS AT SHIPHAY

A film capturing events at Shiphay between October 2014-March 2015

LEARNING ABOUT TRAVELOGUES

Notes from our training session with Eric Torniare.  Some ideas for ways to incorporate different media into the travelogues.

 AESOP'S FABLES - A COMENIUS BOOK

Pupils in Year 3 have created some resources to add to the Comenius book that our Italian partners are creating.  They have re-told some Aesop's fables using art, audio recordings and shadow puppetry.

The Fox and The Crane

Active Language Learning

During our visit to Piove di Sacco, we shared some English teaching resources with our partners.  These were based around the book, "Aliens Love Underpants"  and allowed us to practise colours and numbers in English through a range of games and other activities.

WELCOMING OUR COMENIUS PARTNERS TO SHIPHAY

Highlights from our Welcome Assembly

Year 1 pupils demonstrate traditional Morris Dancing

Some songs from our children that our visitors might recognise. Each team had focused on a different country and learnt a song in that language.  Very appropriately, the Year 5 song was "Whole World in his Hands" sung in Italian while for Year 6, there Swedish choice was, of course, ABBA!

Our Generation - A song that had been written for our pupils and is a celebration of our region.  As the words say, "our home between sea and moor".

Shiphay's Comenius Anthem - You Are My Brother.  The words of the song had been specially adapted by the choir to welcome our visitors.  As the final line says, "may our friendship never cease."

An opportunity to learn about different languages and countries from our visitors before inviting them to an English Cream Tea with some traditional English games.  Anyone for tennis?

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM SHIPHAY

Each class has learnt a Christmas song to add to our Christmas Greetings DVD. Some classes have been able to make use of the Green Screen skills to put a seasonal background in.  Others have used ICT skills to create a festive film.  Here are some examples from the DVD that has been posted to our Partners.

BIRD POSTCARDS FROM LOWER SCHOOL

As part of their "local birds" theme, the pupils in Lower School have created some bird postcards to exchange with our Comenius Partners.

POSTCARDS FROM ARTISTS IN RECEPTION (4-5 YRS)

BIRD FACTFILES AND TREASURE BOXES

This film shows an overview of all the learning that the children at Shiphay Learning Academy have undertaken during the first part of the Comenius Project.  You can also see a lot of the results of their learning in the treasure box pictures and in the films and documents below.  As you can see, this has been a whole school project with pupils from 3-11 taking part and learning about birds and migration.

TREASURE BOXES

As part of our whole school theme on birds, pupils created a wide range of resources using skills from different curriculum areas to put in our treasure boxes.  You can see a sample of some of the results below and some photos of our Comenius Partners receiving them.

BIRD FACTFILES

BIRD FACTFILES FROM LOWER SCHOOL (3-6YRS)
The children in our Lower School Team have been making good use of our school grounds and focusing on birds that can be found in our local area.  As well as their factfiles, they have explored our school grounds, made birdfeeders from recycled objects and become expert bird spotters.  These are some of the factfiles that they have made to share with our partners:

Nursery Factfile

This factfile film was made by children in our Reception classes (3-4 yrs)

The factfile slides below were made by Year 1 (5-6 yrs)

As you can see, there have been a lot of other activities linked to our Comenius project.  These have included making nest cakes, trying to pick things up with our homemade beaks, making bird masks for role play and building bird hides so that we can watch out feathered friends.

BIRD FACTFILES FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL (6-9YRS)

Natural history films from Year 4 (8-9 yrs)

Year 4 used this part of the project to learn how to use the green screen and the iPad to record film footage in the style of David Attenborough and other famous naturalists.  This was part of a block of work in Literacy and, having explored the language of explanation texts, completed the research about different British birds and watched different nature presenters, we think you will agree that the final results are very informative indeed.

BIRD FACTFILES FROM UPPER SCHOOL (9-11YRS)

Explain Everything presentations from Year 6
Pupils in Year 6 used this as an opportunity to explore the use of the App, Explain Everything as a presentation tool. They completed research about migratory birds and used their Literacy skills to think about how best to present the information so that it was accessible to our Comenius Partners, many of whom are a lot younger.

COMENIUS CALENDAR

As part of our Comenius launch and to introduce our whole school theme of "On The Wings Of Friendship", each class found out about a particular bird.  For our youngest pupils, this was a bird that they could find in our school grounds, while our Middle School pupils focused on wading birds from our local area and our eldest pupils focused on local sea birds.  Each class completed some art work and this was incorporated into our Shiphay Comenius Calendar.

COMENIUS LAUNCH ASSEMBLY

Watch the film to see the presentation that was shared with the Shiphay Community to launch the project.
